A few years ago I helped a local club member put a type 35 automatic transmission from a TR2000 into a TR4. The gearing is to high with 70 mph requiring 4000 rpm's.

It may be a bit difficult finding a lower gear since there is only one other size from the 4.10 and the 3.70. The 3.45 is hard to find and when found, very expensive....Ed
You'll still have to replace the diff and narrow it to fit the TR. I've looked high and low, asked all the experts and no one can tell me what ring and pinion will fit the TR other than a TR. There are ratio's offered like the 3.27 in the TR7 I think or the Spit, but it won't fit the TR4/4a. I'm waiting for mine to explode and then replace with a Ford 9 inch. I'll still have to narrow it significantly though.
Robert, that's blastfemmiiii! Got to say it's got more git up an go than it did with the 4 banger....and more looks! I lost 54 hp with the C4, down to 250 hp, so the stock rear should hold up for a while.
Wait,, Ed you never said you changed the motor as well. So since it is basterized already, then yes, a narrowed 9" would be best. What about a Jag IRS for the rear?
I really did "bastardize" my 4 and might have not done it if I'd checked VINs and numbers before making the conversion. I've had the car since 78 when I was 23 and always wanted a bigger engine in it. When I ran the numbers and compared the Piggot books to it, I found that it was one of the last TR4's in 65 with US Specs. The good thing is the way I converted it, it can be "restored" to original specs with very little work. No major welding done or other nasty things and I still have the original motor and tranny. It left the factory as a live axle car, not IRS, so an axle change would be much easier. I kind of like the quickness of the 3.7 gearing though! Only fault is that when I'm doing 60 mph, it's cranking out 3K rpms.
