Restored and modified by a former dirt track mechanic including the fabricated steel half top. Mild 1275 and a worn out 4 speed rib case, goals are to rebuild a spare engine and trans as spares to use the car as a primary driver.
am looking to sell my 1969 MG Midget to make room for a potential project, it has been modified by the previous owner with a nut bolt restoration during the pandemic.
Engine was claimed to have been rebuilt by a his friend. This appears to be a genuine claim as the motor has recent power, good oil pressure (75 cold, 50 hot idle)and does not over heat. I have not taken a compression gauge to it, because it has not given me any problems. Currently running stock ignition, fuel system and exhaust manifold. Aftermarket exhaust (unfortunately it's a bit loud), after market air filters (I have the originals air box but they have clearance issues) cleaned and oiled every three months with valve lash and plug inspection. I have the old plugs as spares if interested in engine running condition. Valve cover gasket was wearing and replaced with a Lucas OE last month.
Transmission does not have any issues, loud first gear but this is similar to my Morris Minor and is expected with rib case transmissions that I have driven. Speedo was inop when I purchased the car, I suspected it was the gear that sits in the transmission. Surprisingly, it was actually a locked up Speedo gauge. I converted it to a GPS Speedo from speedhut. So it retains the original Speedo gauge with a GPS sender. I will include the Speedo gear and locked up gauge in case you want to convert it back. The wiring for this GPS sender is powered off the after market cigarette lighter the previous owner installed with an on-line fuse. So removing the sender would not cause wiring hell.
Interior. The dash custom from the previous owner as an homage to the older MGs and Triumphs. It is fine, I have considered returning to a stock dash, but it works and doesn't look bad. Working horn, lights and gauges. Interior carpet was originally a modified MGB interior, I have since purchased and installed a Spridget carpet kit and will include the original carpet. Will include interior panel replacements for foot wells. There was no gas pedal due to clearance issues with the previous owner. I installed a CNC pedal that fits on the original pedal mount. Heater and blower motor work well. The steering wheel is from a later Midget and I also have a core 1974 wheel that needs to be recovered and I believe a 1979 wheel that looks fine but is ugly. Seats are reupholstered MKIV seats, the car came with MKI style seats but the foam retainer disintegrated in the passenger seat. I am 6' 1" and also had to lower the driver seat so it does not sit on the original rails, but a lowering kit from Summit. I will include the original seat rails that have been cleaned and clear coated.
Brakes and hydraulics were all replaced during the restoration and fluid has been changed annually.
Clutch slave and slave line replaced with a stainless line from Winners circle.
Suspension is relatively tight, I need to go through the struts and check their fluid levels. On big bumps it hits the bump stops and I think it's related to the fluid in the damper/ struts. New tie rod ends last year and steering boots. Unfortunately this reproduction rubber for most parts of the car lasts about 60 seconds outside before it starts to crack.
Wheels and tires are from eBay, they need to be rebalanced. I have the original wheels and tires that came with the car, but they are very old and not advisable to drive on. Car will come with an additional set of wheels and tires and a spare. Up to 45 the car is fairly smooth but the you can feel it in the wheels at higher speeds. Not an issue for where and how I drive it, not something to consider. Spare set of center locks also included. These tires are too big for a square arch car and there is some wheel rub. I tried to gently widen the fender and some of the paint chipped to accommodate the wheels but the flare is very subtle.
Rear diff fluid replaced with GL4, no glitter in the old oil. No issues, but also no LSD.
Body, the car is essentially a wish.com Mazda Miata RF. All steel rear section with a modified soft top. I am sourcing a spare header bar for the new soft top I have to replace the existing top. There are some tears but it is still usable, I usually leave the top on for storage only and remove it when driving the car. Will include spare top fabric. Front fenders were modified so they look different than traditional Midget front end. Hood hinges were flipped and hood was modified to accommodate an after market heater box. I also have a fiberglass hood that I will include with the car. There are no issues with the fiberglass hood but I don't have the heart to modify it to fit. Door handles were shaved and rod actuated points were frenched into the door. The PO showed me how to open with the truck handles, but I have never been successful consistently opening with them and use the inside handles to open the car. Battery also moved into fabbed battery box in passenger fender for weight distribution. Rear license plate also recessed by previous owner.
The bad
No rear license plate light installed because of the recessed mounting area, spare tire also barely fits on trunk with this modification.
Again loud first gear
Again wheels and tires have an imbalance at higher speeds.
Previous owner claims car was backed into in a gas station and there is a dent in the rear quarter and bend in the rear bumper. But again car is straight.
The car is ugly and all reproduced body gaskets I have replaced crack quickly. I have tried different protectants to slow this down, but have instead ordered bulk body gaskets for replacement if there is a big event.
Paint is not great but not bad, I have been routinely touching it up by hand where I can as part of preventative maintenance.
Spares included
Complete windshield and frame
Seats that came with the car (not torn need new foam retainer)
Seat brackets
Several boxes of lamp assemblies
Bumper mounts
Hood hinges assembly
Fiberglass hood in grey primer
Soft top
Spridget carpet
Front discs, pads, rear shoes
4 wire wheels with matching old Michelin tires
1 wire wheel with a really bad tire
Smith Speedo and tach
After market fuel pump
Probably some others that I am not mentioning that I will find.
Asking 7000 expecting less, but not in a rush to sell. I am not interested in trades and cash only.
