For sale is my 1967 MG Midget (located in Fairfield,IA) just under 85,000 miles (believed original miles).
I bought this MG a few years ago, the previous owner had in 2001 bought 5 new wire wheels, tires and a replacement vinyl top and then never drove it, it just sat in storage. Also, the rear leaf springs were replaced around that same time. I got it running but the engine was tired and it needed, brakes, clutch, front end work and etc.
I rebuilt the engine, it was bored .020 over, new pistons/rings, exhaust valves, timing chain, lifters, main and rod bearings, all resealed. The carbs were rebuilt with new modern floats and both jets were replaced. The engine has 20~25psi oil pressure at 800 rpm idle with the oil at full temp and 70psi cold. The motor mounts were replaced. This engine is not a leaker just a couple of drops of oil on the floor overnight and that’s only if the engine oil is brought up to full temperature.
The cooling system was thoroughly cleaned and the thermostat and hoses were replaced. The heater and fan were serviced and work great. The original temp gauge works and is accurate, this car runs cool on the hottest days. I did upgrade the fan to the newer style yellow plastic fan.
A new disturber, plugs and plug wires were installed, both the generator and starter had rebuild tags on them when I got the car. I replaced a faulty voltage regulator with a new one and adjusted it for 13.6v with my Fluke meter.
The rib-case transmission is from late 1964 (it has the modern gear ratios) I resealed it and inspected it with the side plate off and all the gears and synchros looked good. This trans has the metal synchors. The clutch looked new-ish but I did replace the throwout bearing and trans mounts. The clutch slave, master and soft hose were replaced.
I replaced both drive-shaft U joints and installed a low mileage (65k miles) used 3.90 differential.
For the brakes, I replaced the rear slave cylinders and shoes, the rear hard line was replaced along with all the brake soft lines. The fronts got rebuilt calipers and I replace the master cylinder.
All the hub splines were worn, I found 3 excellent used hubs 2 front and 1 rear for the left side, I bought a new one for the right rear side.
For the front suspension both front wishbones were replaced, the swivel pins were tight on both sides and did not require a rebuild. All the rubber bushing were replaced along with the sway-bar bushings.
All the electrical works, turn signals, horn and lights. The battery is a couple of year old with little use. The gas gauge works but has it’s quirks, it goes from full then directly to half full, and then gradually down to 1/8 full where it is near empty. The gas tank was boiled out and an electric full pump was installed. I rebuilt the original tach with new capacitors, resistors and transistors and it worked perfectly for a couple of hundred miles and gave up the ghost. I believe one of that coils went bad in it. I replaced it with a used aftermarket tach and it also has its quirks, it works great when it’s cold but dies when it gets hot. The wiper motor was serviced and re-greased and works well, I’m missing 1 wiper arm and blade.
The tires have 2001 date codes they are not flat spotted or dry rotted (the car was stored on blocks) but they are still old. I hit a piece of metal in the road and punctured the side wall on one of the 2001 tires so it was replaced with a new one.
The dash was repainted in wrinkle paint, the seat covers were replaced last year along with the carpet. The door cards are original and usable.
The body has been patched with metal as needed, I didn't buy re-manufactured parts I made my own from the metal I had. The worst area was the left front rocker ahead of the A-pillar and the driver's side foot box. I did paint the car with single-stage acrylic enamel last year but did not paint the underside of the bonnet or boot lid. I do have some extra paint left. No one is ever going to accuse me of being a great body man, this car is a good driver, not a show car
