John B's 1963 MG Midget MkI
|
SOLD.
I was only the 3rd caretaker of this car from new; with me from 1985 until 1990 - sold prior to my move from GA to the west coast. A little more background:
The original owner, Vern Smith, was a USAF officer, who purchased the car brand new in England while he was stationed there. He purchased it for the purpose of racing it. I don't think it was ever road-registered. It was one of the last 500 Midgets produced with sidecurtains rather than roll-up windows. Vern was living in or around Silver Spring, MD, when a guy I worked with (at the late, lamented Motorhead Ltd., then in Arlington, VA) purchased the car from him.
The left front fender and front valence are not in as good shape as the rest of the car, because Vern bumped a Porsche in a race once, and had to replace them (probably did more damage to the Porsche than the whole MG was worth!). I put the stock rims and tires on it, replacing some widened stock wheels (with "petrified" racing slicks), so that I could tow it when I moved from VA to GA in 1988.
