Steven Stockham's 1958 MG MGA 1500
|
“Belle”
The car was found in Minneapolis, MN having been left out in the elements uncovered for four years necessitating a complete frame-off, nut and bolt restoration. The car's frame was so deteriorated that it was deemed less expensive to find a replacement. The engine was found to be a factory "Gold Seal" replacement from 1963! The head was an 1800 and found to be cracked and was replaced. The carbs, rack & pinion, brakes, differential, shocks, manifold and exhaust system, fuel pump, starter, distributor, radiator, wiper motor, master cylinder, essentially everything was replaced or rebuilt.
The transmission was upgraded to a Ford T-9 5 Speed All-syncro w/overdrive and the electrical system was changed to negative ground. The distributor was changed to a PerTronix electronic one and the wiring harness was replaced.
The car's interior was completely replaced and only the speedometer was retained. The two major parts (other than the body) to be retained are the grille and the windshield. All other chrome pieces were replaced.
Even with all of this, the car still remains essentially stock. The color, while not original, has been returned to a "blue". The wire wheels were upgraded from 48's to chrome 60's (personal preference.) She has been restored to a high standard, not as a concours example, but as a driver. My philosophy is that MG's are meant to be driven as the principle means of enjoyment (other than the restoration!) The car was restored with this goal in mind. The plan is to keep (blue) "Belle" in the family with it being handed down to my son in a couple of decades.
